Subtitles do not work

Hello, as it says the subtitles don´t work in anything, i tried watching the godfather 2 and no subtitle works, i tried reinstalling, downloading subtitles and using the "custom subtitles file" option and nothing works.

I tried going to a site to watch the movie and it wouldn´t play because it said i needed to update java after updating it the movie didn´t work because it said my computer configuration was blocking java in some way, i´m not sure if that´s got anything to do with the subtitle issue but i thought it could be relevant
